Day 15, KALISPELL TO HOLLAND LAKE: Mile 1132

Today - hoorah - heading south - and heading into the countryside again. RVs and big sprawling towns don't really mix so well. Richard and I both broke into big grins as we started heading down the Swan-Seeley valley, with a range of mountains to either side, and no towns or hotels or gas stations to spoil the view.

We stopped briefly at the Wildlife Nature Refuge just below Swan Lake. We had to shush Tom who was trying to be a Ninja or a Deathlord or a Jedi or something - it was all about sticks and shouting - while we walked along past lily pad ponds and brilliant green wetland to a wooden viewing platform in the middle of nowhere. We got a precious ten minutes or so to use our binoculars and spy cranes flying, a little deer peeking up out of the grasses, some beautiful birds and butterflies - then it was back to the world of "chase me!" and we were on our way.

Tonight we're at the Holland Lake campground. On the map it's really isolated. Being Fourth of July weekend, there's a concert going on somewhere on the grounds, and it's now 10.30 pm. But it sounds like good music at least, Tom is snoring gently, and we're pulled into a bay in a lovely patch of pine forest.

We have one more week to go - and rather than just make it about taking the road home - Richard has been planning a route west through small towns and the scenery of the Bitterroot Valley towards the Idaho border. More trails for Tom to endure! But at least he has the consolation of this morning's big holiday buy - at Wal Mart no less - we found a stack of cutprice Lego - and the RV's table top is now a re-enactment of the Indiana Jones movies writ small in plastic bricks. Bliss.
