Enter the Butterfly

The end of term play at Hyde Elementary featured birds, monkeys, snakes, flowers, seeds... and a butterfly called Tom Lister, who rather loved his turn on stage.

Butterfly's Big Moment

Ok so they're all singing out of tune, and SOMEONE doesn't know the words.. but it's Art. Kindergarten style.

Butterfly says Hi

And that's the end of the butterfly diaries... unashamedly soppy stuff from very happy parents.
love to you all, and good night. xx

Memorial Day weekend

Once we could tear ourselves away from the Lexington cabin (see below).. We celebrated Memorial Day weekend with a trip to Hulls Drive-in Movie Theatre. It was quite a sentimental occasion, so many families out for a fantastic old fashioned experience, with a sky so thick with stars, that Tom was as excited about that view as the screen view. Hulls says it is the only non-profit community-operated drive-in left in the entire United States. It certainly felt as if lots of neighbours were there together, pulling up picnic chairs, and letting the kids run free. All veterans were allowed free entry, and there were a few signs praising local boys who are already veterans of Iraq, or even casualties of Iraq.. a lot of pride in the military... as Richard said, it's often the smaller rural towns where young men join up, and we just don't feel the impact of it in the anonymous cities.

Other Things We Did on our bank holiday included big walks in the woods (ahem, longer than expected due to dodgy map reading!), where we spotted a baby tortoise. And one of us was utterly delighted to get a LEGO Star Wars X-Wing fighter, with opposing Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader figures. But he let Tom play with it too.

You have to come and see us

You have to come and see us ...and stay in this cabin. Which we won in a raffle, sort of. It's Hawkridge Retreat, up in the Blue Ridge Mountains above Lexington, Virginia - and we won a half price weekend in the gala for the 100th anniversary of Tom's school - way back last November. It is IDYLLIC. We drove for hours, out into the utter middle of nowhere, up a dirt track with deer scattering beside us and hawks circling overhead, and found this 1890s cabin , beautifully restored. And the first thing we said was, who ELSE can we bring here... for weekends, Thanksgiving, Christmas?? It was a lovely find and a totally utterly peaceful place to be. Plus we met the owners Philip and Ava, who have another log cabin on the next hillside along, and they were great. Within minutes of arriving, we wanted to book to go back.

Spring!

Tudor place field trip

Tudor Place is only a block from home but surrounded by high walls and hedges, so I was eager to go on this field trip for the free entry alone. Mmm, surprising how many mums arrived for this one. The kids were given a talk about the spring flowers (yah, boring) and free magnifying glasses (yeah, that's more like it). I got to trail along behind and snap photos, then wave them off on the bus, and go home for a cuppa. Nice.

All the way from Australia!

It was SO much fun having Aussie family Roberts here to stay. These pix of Paul, Chris, Olivia and Bella are from our big walk at Great Falls. We also did monuments, museums, park and shops.. in two days. They have a LOT of energy. Tom revelled in all the extra attention, little emperor that he is .... x

It's a Zoo out there

The National Zoo - the most hectic fieldtrip so far! We had something like 30 kids between us, and I had 8 to keep an eye on... at one point all of them were holding onto my fingers! But we saw lions and tigers .. and monkeys and marmots... and sealions and spiders.. until they all blurred together, and we jumped about the school bus all the way home.

Tom is an artist

Tom's contribution to the Art Show at Fillmore Centre this spring - his first!
