On Walden Pond

I've always wanted to see it, and this Saturday we headed out - sadly not in Harvey the RV this time - west to Concord, Lexington, and the Pond itself.

Not a lot of time was spent  marking the outbreak of the revolutionary war against we Brits, but we did take the two mile trail around pond and through woods, admiring the scenery together with a few hundred others. Extremely pretty, and I really wish I'd had the guts to do what two older ladies were doing.... swimming in stately fashion right across the very chilly, very blue lake.

We did pay homage to the site where Henry David Thoreau had his primitive cabin, and lived for two years, two months and two days at home in Walden woods.

The "cabin" itself is situated over the road virtually in the car park, and is in fact a replica.

And we were a little less impressed when we realised that Thoreau had lived within earshot of the railway, ten minutes down from the road, and thirty minutes from his parents' home in town. Er, not quite wilderness. But the family Lister had an excellent time nonetheless.
