Escalante - en route to Calf Creek

Sunday

We are having lunch in a great little cafe in Escalante, which is a two horse town at best and none the worse for that. The waitress just made Tom's day with an enormous cream-topped smoothie and a tiny pizza which wasn't on the menu but she knew he would like. We left Bryce this morning and are heading back into the desert with no-where booked for tonight but hopefully a little primitive campground at Calf Creek.

This morning we had just about the best walk of the trip so far - and that is quite a claim. Philippa was intrigued by Kodachrome State park, so we turned in and found we had the place almost to ourselves. We parked and followed the Angel's Palace Trail, first through brilliant yellow flowers to a little gorge and then up through a wonderful Mars-scape of flowing red cliffs and towering chimneys. It was magnificent and all the better for its utter tranquility, with not another soul to be seen. It was hot, but not unbearably so and the warm breeze made a soft swishing sound through the dry vegetation and tiny spiny cacti. Tom leapt about along the trail and gave us heart attacks when we saw how steep the dropoffs were either side of us. So a fantastic morning and a great lunch here, and we had better be on our way...
PS from PT - Dad it's great you're following us on blog and Google Earth! xxx
